From 20 to 27 September, Montréal will become the epicentre of world cycling as the world's best riders gather for the 2026 UCI Road World Championships. The Elite Women’s road race will take place on Saturday 26 September. As Kim Le Court prepares for one of the sport's most prestigious events, the occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on a season that has confirmed her status among the elite and highlighted the extraordinary rise of Mauritian cycling over the past decade.

Her journey is one of talent and determination. It is also part of a broader story about vision, long-term commitment and the collective effort that has helped raise Mauritian cycling to unprecedented heights.

A decade of building Mauritian cycling

Since the creation of Team MCB in 2017, MCB has partnered with the Mauritius Cycling Federation to support the long-term development of cycling in Mauritius. Over that period, the bank has invested Rs 49 million in the discipline, with funding directed towards competition, training and athlete development, coaching facilities, and technology and equipment.

The objective was never limited to supporting a single season or a handful of athletes. It was about helping to create the conditions for sustained growth and performance. Nearly a decade later, the impact is visible across the sport. Mauritian cycling has produced three Olympic qualifiers, won sixteen continental medals, delivered notable performances at the African Games and established a growing presence on major African and international competitions.

Among the athletes who have emerged from this evolution, none has captured the imagination quite like Kim Le Court.

A season that confirms World-class status

The 2026 season has provided further evidence of Kim Le Court's ability to compete against the strongest riders in the world.

Early in the year, she finished fourth overall at the UAE Tour Women, one of the premier events on the women's calendar. She followed that performance with another fourth-place overall finish at the Tour de Suisse Women.

Back home, she successfully retained both her Mauritian National Individual Time Trial and Road Race titles, once again demonstrating her dominance on the national scene.

Her strongest performances came during the summer. At the Tour de France Femmes, Le Court won Stage 6 and went on to finish fourth overall in the general classification, confirming her ability to perform consistently over one of the most demanding races in world cycling.

A few weeks later, she added another landmark achievement by winning the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women, one of the most prestigious victories of her career to date.

These results place her among the standout performers of the 2026 season and further strengthen a résumé that has already made history.

Breaking new ground for Mauritius and Africa

Kim Le Court's rise has been marked by a series of milestones that extend well beyond individual success.

In 2024, she became the first Mauritian rider to win a Women's WorldTour race stage when she claimed victory at the Giro d'Italia Women.

The following season brought even greater achievements. In 2025, she won Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes, becoming the first African cyclist to win a Monument of cycling. Later that year, she became the first African rider to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France Femmes and the first African rider to win a stage of the race.

Each of these accomplishments has expanded the visibility of Mauritian cycling and demonstrated that riders from the Indian Ocean can compete successfully at the very highest level of the sport.
