How golf reflects MCB’s long-term approach to partnerships

As Mauritius strengthens its position on the global golfing map, MCB is playing a growing role in shaping the sport’s development on the island.

With the launch of the MCB Ladies Classic on the Ladies European Tour, the bank is entering a new phase in its long-standing involvement in golf. For Dominic Provençal, Head of MCB Overseas, this commitment goes beyond sponsorship. It reflects how the bank builds long-term relationships, supports key sectors, and contributes to the international visibility of Mauritius.

Golf as a platform for long-term relationships

For MCB, golf is not simply a sport. It is an environment where relationships are built over time, in a setting that encourages trust, consistency and meaningful interaction.

“I think it’s the values that you have in golf which are similar to the values we believe in as a company,” says Dominic. “It teaches humility, patience, respect and perseverance, and these are important in how we work with our clients.”

These shared values make golf a natural extension of MCB’s approach. Over the years, the bank has used its involvement in the sport to connect with clients, particularly in sectors such as hospitality, where golf plays an important role in attracting international visitors. By supporting tournaments and engaging with the wider ecosystem, MCB strengthens relationships in a way that goes beyond traditional business interactions.

Supporting a growing ecosystem in Mauritius

MCB’s involvement in golf has evolved alongside the development of the sport in Mauritius. The island is home to one of the oldest golf courses in the southern hemisphere, the Gymkhana Golf Club, established in 1844. Over time, the landscape has transformed, with internationally recognised courses designed by players such as Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer.

Two decades ago, golf remained relatively niche on the island. Today, it is far more accessible, with a growing number of players and a stronger local base. This evolution has been reinforced by the presence of major tournaments. The Legends Tour has been hosted in Mauritius since 2009, while the Mauritius Open, part of the DP World Tour, has been staged since 2015.

These events have helped position Mauritius as a credible destination on the global golfing calendar. For MCB, supporting this ecosystem is closely linked to its client base. Many of the bank’s partners in the hospitality sector are also owners of golf courses, making the sport a natural point of connection.

“It’s also a way of giving back to a community.” explains Dominic. “Our clients are part of this ecosystem, and we want to contribute to its development.”

A new phase with the MCB Ladies Classic

The introduction of the MCB Ladies Classic marks a new step in this journey. After years of involvement with the Legends Tour, the bank saw an opportunity to bring something different to Mauritius by supporting women’s golf at an international level.

“We felt that ladies’ golf was very appealing and could be very innovative in this part of the world,” says Dominic. “It ties in with our objective of promoting greater inclusion, while also helping to stimulate the sport locally.”

Beyond the sporting dimension, the tournament is expected to attract international media attention and enhance Mauritius’ appeal as a golf destination. It also offers new opportunities for engagement, including pro am events that bring together professionals, clients and partners. This evolution reflects MCB’s willingness to adapt its partnerships over time while remaining aligned with its long-term approach.

Investing in the next generation

Alongside international tournaments, MCB has also focused on developing local talent. The bank sponsors the Mauritian junior golf team, supporting a group of young players who compete in regional and continental competitions. Some have already achieved strong results, including a recent win at the Global Junior Golf.

“Ultimately, the ambition is to see a Mauritian player compete at the highest level,” says Dominic. “But beyond that, it’s about creating opportunities and inspiring the next generation.”

MCB works closely with the Mauritius Golf Federation, complementing existing grassroots programmes and helping to make the sport more accessible. This investment reflects a broader philosophy. Building sustainable impact requires consistency and a clear vision over time.

A long-term commitment

MCB’s involvement in golf is rooted in a long-term perspective. From supporting international tournaments to investing in local talent, each initiative contributes to a broader objective.

For the bank, golf brings together key elements of its approach. Strong relationships, support for clients and partners, and a commitment to contributing to the development of Mauritius.

“It’s about being part of something that grows over time,” Dominic concludes. “That’s how we see our role, both in golf and in the way we work as a bank.”
