The third edition of Deba Klima, a competition focused on the fight against climate change and its challenges, promises to be exciting. Once again this year, students from 16 colleges across the island will make their voices heard and share their ideas about the critical issues facing our planet. The debates will be broadcast from Saturday, May 24, on MBC 1 and MBC Sat from 8:15 p.m., just after the news bulletin of 7.30 p.m. The Deba Klima, which aims to raise awareness and integrate Mauritian youth around the crucial issues related to climate change, is an MCB Group and a Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre initiative, in collaboration with Dr. François Gemenne, a renowned specialist in environmental geopolitics and migration.

A record number of registrations

After two thrilling editions, the competition continues to arouse keen interest among young people; 76 colleges across the country responded to the call from the competition organizers. Through videos, they demonstrated their ability to think about possible solutions to address the challenges and issues of climate change. Following a pre-selection exercise, 16 colleges were qualified for the round of 16. For each debate, two colleges will compete on the same theme focused on climate change, one in favour of the problem posed and the other against.

Who will topple St-Joseph College?

For each debate, two schools will face off on a theme focused on climate change- one arguing in favor of the issue presented, and the other against it. Sodnac SSS will debate against La Confiance College, Loreto College, Port Louis will face Sir Lekraz Teelock SSS, and St Joseph College, the reigning champion, determined to defend its hard-won crown from last year's victory over Notre Dame College, will take on St Esprit College. Loreto College of Bambous Virieux will go against Loreto College Rose Hill, while Sookdeo Bissoondoyal SC will challenge John Kennedy College. Finally, New Eton College will cross swords with Ebène SSS Girls.

Kreol Morisien: A Powerful Tool

The 48 participants in the round of 16 will share ideas, exchange experiences, and propose innovative solutions to tackle the global climate change crisis. Each team will research a specific theme and engage in debates conducted in Kreol Morisien, allowing a broader audience to fully grasp climate change's stakes and challenges. A range of key topics will be on the agenda, including: « Bann konpani prive osi bizin kontribie dan Fon pou bann Pert ek Domaz. », or « Bann gouvernman bizin obliz bann konpani lasirans asir dibien tou dimounn pou fer fas bann risk klimatik. » For this third edition, university academics and professionals in Kreol Morisien from the University of Mauritius, led by Professor Arnaud Carpooran, supported both the organizing team and the participants through coaching videos, aimed at helping them make better use of our mother tongue.
