MCB, A long-term commitment to Mauritian cycling

Mauritian cycling has, in recent years, become one of the clearest expressions of what a sport can achieve when ambition is supported by structure, consistency and long-term commitment. That is what gives meaning to MCB’s support for the discipline since 2017. It is a story that goes beyond financial investment, one that reflects what can happen when the objective is to contribute to something larger: helping to shape a culture, strengthen a framework, and extend the horizon of what athletes and institutions believe is possible.

Beyond sponsorship, the objective has been to help create the right conditions for Mauritian cycling to grow sustainably and compete at a higher level. Since 2017, MCB has invested Rs 49 million in the sport: Rs 23 million towards competitions, Rs 14 million for training and athlete development, Rs 6 million for coaching facilities and another Rs 6 million in technology and equipment. From the outset, the ambition was not simply to support a season or increase visibility for the brand. The focus was on helping to build a stronger framework around the sport, one that could support athletes over time and contribute to the overall development of cycling in Mauritius.

The results achieved over the years have given real weight to that ambition. They have been built progressively through discipline, continuity and collective effort. Three riders qualified for the Olympic Games, sixteen continental medals, a remarkable performance at the 2024 African Games, and an increasingly assured presence on major African and international events: Mauritian cycling has moved up a level. This progress is neither accidental nor the product of a brief surge. It shows that with a clear vision, strong support and the right resources, a sport can once again set its sights on the highest stage. But in elite sport, the real question always begins after the first results arrive.

That is also what makes this commitment distinctive in Mauritius. Companies want to back projects built on vision, method and long-term ambition. Team MCB reflects this approach. When a federation comes forward with a solid structure, a clear plan and a sustainable commitment over time, it can lead to more than financial support. It can lay the foundation for a meaningful partnership. But for that to happen, the ambition must first be carefully shaped and patiently built.

That is broadly what happened in the lead-up to the creation of Team MCB in 2017. It took time, dialogue and a full year of preparation between the Mauritius Cycling Federation and MCB to put in place a more structured and professional framework designed to support the long-term development of the sport, both in sporting and organisational terms. This groundwork led to the creation of a demanding technical set-up, rigorous management and an approach designed to last. Beyond cycling itself, that may be the most powerful message of this journey: that a different model is possible for Mauritian sport, one built on strong partnerships between federations and businesses in support of a shared ambition.

By supporting this discipline consistently since 2017, MCB has not sought to define a model but rather to contribute to its development. If that approach can inspire other sporting disciplines and partnerships in Mauritius, then Mauritian cycling may ultimately have delivered far more than sporting success alone: it may have offered a clear, practical and inspiring path for the future of sport in the country.
